Greener driving for Northern summer roads: The new Nokian Hakka Green 3 summer tire rolls lightly and sustainably

Drivers on Northern summer tires want their tires to be safe in case of rain. Most drivers also want greener driving, low fuel consumption, eco-friendly raw materials, and better durability. The new-generation Nokian Hakka Green 3 summer tire, a member of the Hakka product family that is designed for varying Northern weather, skillfully combines safety in wet weather with light rolling. This new premium summer tire from Nokian Tyres feels safe and balanced in rainy weather, saves fuel, and offers more enjoyable kilometers of driving.

The technological core of the latest product in the Nokian Hakka summer tire family from the world’s northernmost tire manufacturer is the Green Sense concept, which enables the Nokian Hakka Green 3 to stop swiftly as well as effortlessly prevent aquaplaning on northern roads that may occasionally be full of ruts. The handling is stable, precise, and comfortable in dry weather and rain alike.

The Nokian Hakka Green Hybrid rubber compound, developed for the harsh Northern roads, combined with the customized tread pattern will ensure excellent wear resistance from the first days of spring to the colder fall weather. New, sustainable material solutions supplement the tire’s green nature. The bio-based resin that is added to the eco-friendly compound makes driving lighter and ensures that the product has excellent wet grip and wear resistance.

The wear resistance of the new Hakka Green 3 is up to 35% higher than its predecessor. This is a major leap forward in durability that may correspond to an additional summer season or approximately 10,000 additional kilometers, depending on the driving style. The wet grip class according to the EU tire label is A, the best possible rating, for most sizes. The extensive selection includes a total of 6 sizes that are ranked in the EU tire label’s highest class A in terms of wet grip and rolling resistance; the most popular size on the market, 205/55 R16, is also included.

The comprehensive size selection of the Nokian Hakka Green 3, which offers comfortable and eco-friendly driving, ranges from 13 to 18 inches and is especially suited for small and mid-size family cars. A large number of sizes have been especially designed for the latest hybrids and electric vehicles. The most common speed ratings are T (190 km/h), H (210 km/h), and V (240 km/h). The key markets for the renewed Hakka summer tire family are the Nordic countries and Russia. Hakka Green 3’s entire, extensive size selection will be made available to drivers during the spring of 2021.

Natural safety for the Northern summer

Varying summer weather is challenging for the driver and even for high-quality summer tires. The Nokian Hakka Green 3 makes your journey safe, comfortable, and eco-friendly from the chilly spring showers and the blistering heat of the summer days, all the way through to the foggy fall mornings – in all the Nordic summer conditions, that is.

- The new Nokian Hakka Green 3 makes the state-of-the-art safety features, eco-friendliness, and reliable durability, which are all highly valued by Nordic consumers, available to the ever more popular, smaller hybrids and electric vehicles. The tire feels efficient and naturally smooth in urban traffic, on highways, and rural gravel roads, says Product Development Manager Jarno Röytiö from Nokian Tyres.

In the Nordic summer tire survey (Nokian Tyres, March 2020), good grip on wet roads and aquaplaning resistance were the highest-rated characteristics in a tire among drivers. Fuel efficiency and wear resistance were also at the top of the list.

Sustainability is an essential part of Nokian Tyres’ business. The safety and eco-friendliness are considered throughout the tire’s entire life cycle. The Nokian Hakka Green 3 offers commendable safety and fuel efficiency. The tyre’s wet grip and fuel efficiency classification according to the EU tyre label are among the best in the industry, in classes A or B.

- The Nokian Hakka Green 3 has extremely low rolling resistance and that lowers fuel

consumption. This, in turn, leads to lower CO2 emissions, making your carbon footprint smaller. To those who value green mobility, our new product offers savings of up to 0.6 liters per 100 km, when comparing the difference between classes A and G on the EU tire label. In other words, the driver’s choice really does matter.

Better grip and handling – Green Sense concept

The Nokian Hakka Green 3 is the master of the varying conditions of the Nordic summer. Its reliable safety features, improved wear resistance, and green nature are based on the Green Sense concept. The concept combines Nokian Tyres’ decades of expertise in product development and testing with a search for entirely new tread models and material solutions.

The unique Hakka Green Sense concept consists of a tread model and rubber compound that have been especially developed for the demanding Northern summer weather. Typical of the Nokian Hakka family, the asymmetrical and stylish Triple Zone tread model consists of functional zones that each have a specific role.

The large, heavily bound tread blocks on the outer shoulder stabilize handling and make the tire steer accurately. The Active Hydro Zone in the tire’s center area ensures excellent grip and control on dry and wet roads alike. The center section is dominated by the sturdy main ribs. The rib closest to the inner shoulder has strong diagonal grooves, or sipes, of different depths and lengths. The precisely aligned sipes form a dense network that stores water and effectively removes it from between the tire and the driving surface, guiding it into the wide main grooves through the rib’s center groove. The sipe’s contour ensures that the high-performance tire has excellent aquaplaning resistance and wet grip, even when worn.

Nokian Tyres Coanda Technology accelerates the removal of water from the longitudinal groove on the inner shoulder and effectively prevents aquaplaning. The curved, ramp-like design of the tread blocks on the inner shoulder guides and accelerates the flow of water from the longitudinal groove into the transverse groove. The Coanda effect refers to the tendency of flow to turn toward a nearby surface.

Eco-friendliness and ease of driving – Nokian Hakka Green Hybrid rubber compound

The Hakka Green Hybrid rubber compound in this new, eco-friendly and wear resistant product represents the state of the art in technology. Containing new bio-based materials, the extremely durable rubber compound that guarantees low rolling resistance masters the demanding and varying conditions of the Northern summer.

- The functional full silica compound adapts to changes in temperature, resulting in excellent wet grip during the spring and fall. The 100% bio-based resin combined with the polymers of the eco-friendly rubber compound boosts light rolling, creating an extremely flexible end product that can tolerate rough roads very well, Röytiö explains.

The sturdy steel belt structure of this new Nokian Hakka product consists of even denser optimized steel wires. The strong steel belt structure makes the structure light but tough, which can be felt as precise handling during evasions and lane changes, even at higher speeds.

The flexible and strong steel belt structure offers numerous benefits when combined with the Nokian Hakka Green Hybrid rubber compound and a modern tread pattern. The stable handling makes lane changes and cornering easy and controlled. The lighter, eco-friendlier rolling can be seen in the reduced fuel bill. Rolling noise is pleasant and quiet on asphalt and gravel roads alike.

Major leap forward in wear resistance – up to an additional summer season

According to the wear tests carried out in the Nordic countries and Russia, the wear resistance of the new Hakka Green 3 is up to 35% higher than its predecessor, the Hakka Green 2.

- This increase in wear resistance means that the tires are good for up to an additional season, also saving the environment as tires do not need to be replaced as often. Furthermore, we have improved the puncture and cut resistance of the Nokian Hakka Green 3 by increasing the amount of rubber on the tread groove roots. This provides added durability for gravel roads and surprising scenarios by preventing loose stones and other objects from penetrating the tire structure; in a worst case scenario, this could lead to tire breakage.

Simple safety – Driving Safety Indicator and info area

Tires that are in good condition can substantially reduce the risk of aquaplaning. In order to allow drivers to better monitor the tread depth of their tires, Nokian Tyres developed two ingenious innovations that improve safety: the Driving Safety Indicator and the aquaplaning indicator.

The Driving Safety Indicator (DSI) on the tire's center rib indicates the tread depth. The numbers allow you to check the remaining tread in millimeters. The numbers fade out, one at a time, as the tire wears down. The aquaplaning indicator warns against an increased risk for aquaplaning. The water drop symbol disappears when less than 4 mm of tread depth remains.

The location and pressure indicators on the sidewall info area improve safety. The information area allows for recording the correct inflation pressure and installation location when changing tires. Comfort and safety are improved further by an additional field that can be used to record the tightening torque of bolts for alloy rims.

Nokian Hakka – unique Northern concept to protect your journey

The Nokian Hakka family of summer tires is tailored for Northern conditions. We manufactured our first Nordic summer tires already in 1932. Much has changed since then, but one thing hasn’t: our understanding of the extreme Nordic conditions.

Uneven and rough road surfaces as well as rapidly changing weather conditions are typical of the Northern conditions, and they require tires to have special features. We have developed the rubber compounds and structures for our Hakka summer tires to meet the demanding and varying summer conditions. The Hakka summer tires behave predictably across a wide temperature range and tolerate wear as well as the occasionally poor road conditions.

All of the Nokian Hakka summer tires and Hakkapeliitta winter tires are covered by the Hakka Guarantee. If your Nokian Hakka summer tire is damaged beyond repair, our free Hakka Guarantee will provide you with a new tire, free of charge. The Hakka Guarantee is valid to a tread depth of four millimeters and for, at most, one year from the date of purchase. If the tire is damaged while on the road, the Hakka Guarantee roadside assistance service will be dispatched to assist you.
