Balanced, precise, lightly rolling

Nokian WR G2 SUV – a new SUV tyre for demanding winter driving

The new Nokian WR G2 SUV was developed with the needs of European SUV drivers in mind. When designing this high-performance winter tyre, Nokian Tyres’ winter experts focused on consumer wishes. Drivers expect their winter tyres to enable safe driving in all conditions, on icy, wet, dry or slushy roads alike. Special attention was paid to the tyres’ handling properties, particularly at high speeds and on all kinds of road surfaces.

Heavy SUVs need winter tyres that are sturdy, powerful and feature special driving properties. The Nokian WR G2 SUV features unique driving properties that are emphasised when cornering, lane changing and dodging. The tyre responds to the driver’s steering movements precisely and immediately.

The Nokian WR G2 SUV is excellent for driving on snowy roads and bare asphalt at high speeds. The tyre’s excellent slush properties have not been achieved by sacrificing other basic features of a good, balanced winter tyre. The Nokian WR G2 SUV is not afraid of water: it holds its grip, remains stable and stops precisely on wet and watery surfaces.

Thanks to the splined centre rib, the Nokian WR G2 SUV rolls sensitively and easily. Lightly rolling tyres consume less fuel, which, consequently, reduces CO2 emissions.

The product went through versatile, thorough testing on different tracks: at Nokian Tyres’ test centres in Ivalo and Nokia, as well as on high-speed test tracks in Papenburg, Germany, Idiada, Spain, and in New Zealand.

Northern know-how underlines winter safety

Extreme climate-related phenomena have become increasingly frequent in Europe; winter storms rage across the continent, and heavy snowfall and rain are often encountered. Temperatures fluctuate rapidly and surprisingly from slight frost to zero degrees or even warmer, which makes snow-covered roads slushy.

Slush is a common and dangerous form of water for winter drivers. When the air temperature rises, snow is turned into wet slush. Furthermore, slush is also generated when roads are treated with salt in order to prevent slippery ice from forming. Slush makes driving difficult and unpleasant, even scary.

Nokian Tyres is the northernmost tyre manufacturer in the world. It has been developing and manufacturing valued winter tyres for over 70 years. Nokian Tyres tests its products in demanding, extreme conditions, and introduced unique slush planing tests for winter tyres in the early 1990s. Over the 15 years of slush testing, the company has accumulated excellent knowledge and understanding of slush planing.

The slush grip of the new product is based on new technical ideas and innovations: the slush edge, an asymmetrical tread design and polished grooves. The asymmetric tread design features a sharply rounded, wedge-like inner shoulder. This slush edge becomes effective when driving in slush: it efficiently pushes the heavy mass of snow and water to the side, away from the contact area between the tyre and the road. This also enhances the functionality of the lateral grooves. The polished grooves speed up the removal flow of water and slush.

A stable tyre with a good grip on snowy, wet and dry surfaces

The Nokian WR G2 SUV features an ultramodern, moderately asymmetric tread design. The outer shoulder shape and siping makes the tyre easy to handle and stable to drive on any surface. The inner shoulder ensures grip.

The new innovation, the power on/off stabiliser, enhances the safety and driving properties of the tyre in all situations, especially during rapid acceleration. The stabiliser ensures that the tread pattern that provides grip does not bend too much. This ensures excellent driving stability on dry surfaces with good grip. The stable, logically behaving tyre increases traffic safety, particularly during overtaking and on corners.

The rubber compound of the Nokian WR G2 SUV combines silica and plant-based canola oil, which is derived from a natural raw material. This compound improves the tyre’s wet properties and handling properties. The natural oil provides improved resistance to tear and better grip in cool weather. The new compound also reduces the tyre’s rolling resistance; the lightly rolling tyre reduces fuel consumption.

The Nokian WR G2 SUV features an all-new sipe solution tailored especially for this tyre: the 3-D self-locking siping of the direct row of blocks in the centre area supports the tyre both laterally and longitudinally, and particularly improves driving stability and wet grip.

Efficient wet grip when braking

The outermost sipe on the tyre shoulder is a completely straight zigzag sipe. Optimised for SUV use, this siping provides good snow grip. The direct sipe allows the block to bend when braking so that the edge of the block functions like a windscreen wiper on a wet surface: it sweeps the water away from the tyre’s contact area, allowing the part of the tread block that is in contact with the road to gain a firm grip on the surface. The structure and size of the straight sipe ensure that this Wipe Sipe functions optimally throughout the tyre’s operating life.

The labels and indicators on the sidewall and tread of the tyre make driving and tyre maintenance easier. The Driving Safety Indicator (DSI) indicates the groove depth in simple numbers. The Winter Safety Indicator is a small snowflake symbol at the bottom of the groove. When the snowflake wears out, it means that the groove depth is less than 4 mm and the tyre is no longer safe in demanding winter use.

The info area on the sidewall of the tyre helps the tyre mechanic or driver find the right tyre pressure. The simple contour picture shows the tyre’s mounting location under the car, which facilitates tyre mounting at the change of seasons.

Sustainable safety with respect for the environment

The birch-leaf symbol on the sidewall of the Nokian WR G2 SUV expresses environmental friendliness:
no harmful plasticiser oils have been used in the tyre. The tread compound includes canola oil.

Respect for the environment is one of the fundamental values of Nokian Tyres. The company persistently works to minimise harmful environmental impacts. As the first tyre manufacturer in the world, Nokian Tyres introduced a manufacturing method using only purified, low-aromatic oils in 2004. Minimal environmental impact is a factor taken into account in material selections. Sustainable safety is a guiding principle: the goal is to produce safe tyres that keep their good properties throughout their operating lives.

An extensive size range

The Nokian WR G2 SUV tyres will be available in retail outlets in Central and Eastern Europe and the USA in the autumn of 2008.

The extensive size range comprises 26 items ranging from 15” H and V speed category tyres all the way to the 22” size. The offering also includes a 21” 4WD tyre. The run flat version is available in the 255/50 R 19 size. Most of the tyres have a reinforced structure and are labelled with the XL sign.
