Tires feel great in the snow and ice

Lostintokyo • 17 months ago

The confidence levels I have with these tires are unmatched. I've tried many different sets of winter tires over the years and there's a reason why I keep coming back to Nokian

Smooth and quiet ride

NokianR5ftw • 17 months ago

Bought for 2014 Mazda3 which is awful with stiff and loud ride. Previous winter tires and all seasons do not do anything. These R5 made my car so much smoother over bumps and road noise is 90% we reduced. Car floats on smooth pavement and still feel rough roads but it's much better.

Remember

  • When selecting a tyre, always choose one that matches your usage in the best possible way. In addition to the three characteristics, there are a number of other factors related to safety, performance, and the environment that tyre developers and testers take into account.
  • Although the new label makes it easier to compare tyre models, you should also support your decision by consulting the following, for example tyre retail experts or independent magazine test articles.
  • The wet grip rating for a tyre does not indicate how suitable the tyre is for the real winter weather. Instead, it may be misleading and endanger traffic safety. In demanding and varying winter conditions, the most important safety characteristics for tyres are ice grip and snow grip.

PURE GRIP

Winter can be unpredictable and hazardous, but your tires should not. The Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta R5 covers all northern winter conditions and performs predictably on bare, wet, icy and snowy roads. The Double Block Grip design offers superior grip and handling, while the excellent ice performance is guaranteed by the unique Arctic Grip Crystals. The microscopic crystals work like built-in studs. As the tire wears down, the crystals emerge and activate a well-needed grip reserve.

PURE SILENCE

Tire noise can affect driving comfort significantly. Lower noise levels can make the journey more comfortable and less exhausting for the driver. The Hakkapeliitta R5 offers a smooth, comfortable and steady soundscape. The pleasant sound levels have been achieved by eliminating the most disturbing noise peaks the human ear can distinguish. The Silent Touch tread design offers comfortable and pleasant rolling thanks to the tread block distribution.

PURE ECO-FRIENDLINESS

Starting from the material selection, the Hakkapeliitta R5 has been designed to leave a smaller carbon footprint. The Green Trace compound offers, excellent winter grip, better mileage and low rolling resistance. The large amount of natural rubber keeps the compound flexible under all conditions. Low rolling resistance generates fuel savings and cuts down on harmful emissions. More than one third of the materials in the compound are renewable and recycled.

WE RECOMMEND THIS TIRE ALSO FOR ELECTRIC AND HYBRID CARS

IF ALL CARS IN FINLAND, NORWAY AND SWEDEN USED HAKKAPELIITTA R5 WINTER TIRES:

340 million litres of fuel would be saved, amounting to 10 000 full tanker trucks.***

There would be 900 000 tons decrease of carbon monoxide emissions, equalling to the emissions of 80 000 passanger cars.***

Impeccable ice grip

Arctic Grip Crystals. The microscopic, third-generation grip crystals are mixed in the tread rubber. These crystals work like built-in studs, creating sharp, tough grip edges inside the rubber. As the tire wears down, the crystals emerge and activate the much-needed grip reserve.

Superior grip and handling

The Double Block Grip design offers superior grip and handling, which can be seen especially on the shoulder areas of the tire. The stiff row of tread blocks starts from the center and is split in two moving towards the shoulder area. Compared to its predecessor, the Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta R5 has 40% more tread blocks on the shoulder and intermediate area. This increase means that the contact area has more rubber touching the surface, which results in better grip on slippery surfaces.

Safe and green mobility

Hakkapeliitta R5 is a durable, comfortable and extremely energy efficient winter tire. Lighter rolling saves fuel and extends the range of electric vehicles. Due to the lightly rolling tread design and the Green Trace compound, the rolling resistance of the Hakkapeliitta R5 has been improved even further. The eco-friendly driving features come from ingredients like natural rubber, recycled steel, plant derived oils and pine resin. More than one third of the compound consists of renewable and recycled materials.

Patented safety

The patented Winter Safety Indicator (WSI) in the tread further improves safety. It displays the remaining tread in millimeters together with a snowflake symbol. The snowflake remains visible until four millimeters of tread remain. Once the snowflake has worn out, purchasing new winter tires is recommended to help ensure driving stays safe.

FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

Sustainability is an essential part of our business. Both safety and eco-friendliness are considered throughout the tire’s entire life cycle. As with all our products, the Hakkapeliitta R5 is developed with sustainability in mind.

* Difference calculated based on fuel consumption results from independent magazine tests 2020-2021. The ratio between fuel consumption and the RRC was estimated at 5.5. Main competitors included Continental VikingContact 7, Goodyear UltraGrip Ice 2, Michelin X-Ice Snow, Pirelli Ice Zero FR and Bridgestone Blizzak Ice. Source: Assessment based on KPMG’S True value study 12/2021.

** Calculations are based on a comparison of the fuel consumption and rolling resistance of Hakkapeliitta R5 to the fuel consumption and rolling resistance of other premium winter tires. Key assumptions used in the calculations are as follows: number of passenger cars in Finland, Sweden and in Norway, annual average mileage, and annual average fuel consumption. Winter tires are estimated to account for 45% of the mileage. The societal cost of carbon dioxide emissions has been calculated with an assumed price of 60 euros per ton of CO2 emissions, which is in line with the cost used by the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, the Ministry of Climate and Environment Norway and the US Environmental Protection Agency. Year 2020 not used for the calculation due to the COVID-19 skewing the figures. Source: Assessment based on KPMG’s True Value methodology 12/2021.
