The newest member of the Nokian summer tyre range is a top performer in rainy weather

New Nokian Line – Top performance for wet roads

The high-performance Nokian Line summer tyre masterfully handles the rapidly changing road conditions in the summer. This latest introduction to the updated Nokian summer tyre range, tailored for Central European roads, provides the best possible grip and a precise driving feel, especially for wet roads. The new innovations, the Cross-block Sipes and surge grooves, enable the Nokian Line to steer precisely and provide excellent grip, even on roads made slippery by rain.

This new tyre, designed especially for high-powered cars and with a good, precise driving feel, offers uncompromisingly safe and comfortable travel from the first moments of spring until long into the autumn. The structural features and tread compound of the easy to control, logically behaving Nokian Line have been tailored to work together and correspond to the different challenges of the T, H, V, and W speed categories. This extensive product family, being introduced into the Central European market next spring, comprises a total of 45 products from 15 inches up to 17 inches.

New innovations maximise wet grip

According to research, rain is the weather phenomenon that causes the most traffic accidents. Driving is easy on a sun-scorched highway, but when a sudden rain shower strikes, the possibility of temporarily losing control grows. A key factor is the loss of tyre grip or dangerous aquaplaning, which can quickly turn the driver into a passenger in an uncontrollable car.

“When optimising the road contact and developing the structure of Nokian Line, we aimed at maximising a precise driving feel and excellent wet grip. We utilised a high-speed camera for this purpose to a great extent. The finishing touches for the exceptional wet grip and anti-aquaplaning characteristics are the new innovations that effectively remove water from between the tyre and the road or store it temporarily,” says Product Development Manager Juha Pirhonen from Nokian Tyres.

The unique Cross-block Sipes on the centre ribs of the tyre work in two ways. Near the outer shoulder, the Cross Sipes combine with the firmer rib to provide driving stability. The more heavily articulated Cross Sipe on the rib next to the inner shoulder ensures soft road contact, while reducing rolling resistance and noise levels. The angle and groove volume of the slanted Cross Sipe have been optimised. On a wet road, the Cross Sipe is doubly effective in preventing aquaplaning: it stores water during road contact and accelerates the flow of water into the main grooves.

To prevent aquaplaning, separate Swoop Grooves were also shaped in the transversal main grooves on the outer shoulder. These elliptical slots store more water as the volume of the transversal grooves increases. The shape ensures that the firm tyre has excellent wet grip, even when worn. The Swoop grooves are larger at the bottom so that, as the tyre wears down, their volume increases instead of reducing.

The transversal grooves are also cut in order to be open, which accelerates the flow of discharge water as the tyre pushes its way through a water layer. The flow of the water displaced by the tyre tread is also accelerated by the four wide and polished main grooves. Polishing the grooves also improves the stylish appearance of the tyre.

Stable and precise, even at higher speeds

The typical inside-outside tread design of the test-winning Nokian summer tyre range adds to driving comfort and makes the tyre easy to steer. The larger, bound pattern blocks on the outer shoulder make the tyre firmer.

The strong centre rib supports the mid-section, where a more rigid rubber compound has been lifted below the surface. This ensures safe drivability even at higher speeds and in extreme situations.

The precise driving feel is also accentuated by the double block support on the outer shoulder. During normal driving, it flexes and lowers rolling resistance, but it also activates in order to provide support during rougher driving, as the tread blocks turn against each other and stiffen the structure of the tyre. The shoulder areas are also supported by the 20-degree slants on the groove walls; this provides excellent driving comfort during cornering, lane changes, and evasion.

Eco-friendly, comfortable ride

The new tread compound, the Nokian Intelligent Silica, is especially developed for higher speeds. The molecular chains of the new-generation functional rubber compound combine with the silica particles to form an extremely strong, yet flexible combination. The rubber compound represents the latest in technological developments: it works in an exemplary manner in a wide range of temperatures, maximising wet grip. At the same time, it reduces heat generation while driving, thereby improving wear resistance.

Thanks to the new rubber compound, tread model and innovations, this new product from Nokian Tyres has exceptionally low rolling resistance. The Nokian Line tolerates varying roads well, rolls lightly, consumes less fuel, and minimises harmful CO2 emissions.

The circular indentations, reminiscent of a golf ball, on the walls of the transversal grooves provide additional driving comfort. This Silent Groove Design innovation controls the interior noise and passing noise of the vehicle. The indentations guide the airflow, removing the noise waves caused by the edges of the transversal grooves and thereby preventing an unpleasant, howling sound. The design also reduces air resistance and cools the surface of the tyre, in turn improving wear resistance.

New groove depth indicator and info area

This wet road champion has a new type of Driving Safety Indicator (DSI), patented by Nokian Tyres, on its tread surface. The new introduction is that the DSI has been made easier to use than ever before. The numbers indicating groove depth and the water drop symbol indicating a risk of aquaplaning have been rotated to be immediately visible to a driver inspecting the tyres installed on a vehicle. The water drop symbol disappears at the point that less than four millimetres of tread are remaining, indicating an increased risk for aquaplaning. The information area allows for recording the correct inflation pressure and installation location during tyre change.

Nokian Line – Wet Performer

  • Precise and stable in rapidly changing weather conditions
  • Unique grip and safety for wet roads
  • Comfort and economy

Main innovations:

Cross-block Sipe. Increased driving stability, lower rolling resistance. Effectively prevents aquaplaning. The Cross-block Sipes on the centre ribs of the tyre work in two ways. Swoop Grooves. Effectively prevents aquaplaning. The elliptical slots on the transversal grooves on the outer shoulder store more water, as the volume of the transversal grooves increases. This improves the aquaplaning resistance characteristics. The transversal grooves are also cut in order to be more open, which accelerates the flow of discharged water.

Silent Groove Design. More driving comfort. The circular indentations on the walls of the transversal grooves control the airflow. They prevent the creation of an unpleasant, howling sound. The design makes driving comfortably quiet. It also reduces air resistance and cools the surface of the tyre, in turn improving wear resistance.

Shoulder Groove Design. Better driving stability. The shoulder areas are supported with 20-degree slants on the groove walls; this provides excellent driving comfort during cornering, lane changes, and evasion.

Double Block support. Precise driving feel, lower rolling resistance. The double block support on the outer shoulder provides a more precise driving feel and increased stability. During normal driving, it flexes and lowers rolling resistance, but it also activates in order to provide support during rougher driving, as the tread blocks turn against each other.

Nokian Intelligent Silica rubber compound. Excellent wet grip, more wear resistance. The molecular chains of the new-generation functional rubber compound combine with silica particles to form an extremely strong, yet flexible combination. The rubber compound represents the latest in technological developments: it works in an exemplary manner in a wide range of temperatures, maximizing wet grip. At the same time, it reduces heat generation while driving, thereby improving wear resistance.
