Replacing two tires – Where to install newer tires on a vehicle?

Back to articles

Having a full set of new tires is the most recommended and ideal choice for optimal performance and safety. The tires should also all be the same exact size and brand. However, there are circumstances where replacing just two tires becomes necessary. In such cases, ensure that the new tires are installed on the rear axle.

New tires on the rear axle

When replacing tires in pairs, relocate partially worn tires from the rear to the front. By having a better grip on the rear axle, the vehicle demonstrates greater predictability and more consistent handling. It helps prevent oversteer, which can be more challenging to control compared to understeer. When the new tires are installed on the rear axle, you also have better control of the vehicle in emergency situations.

A good grip on the rear axle is crucial on wet roads when aquaplaning is a concern. It is relatively easy to regain control over an aquaplaning front axle by merely easing off the throttle. If the rear wheels start to lose friction with the road surface, it can cause side-to-side sliding that is challenging to correct.

It is recommended to replace all four tires – or two tires – at the same time. In case it is unavoidable to change only one tire, install the new tire on the rear axle. Additionally, consider changing tires to ensure even tire wear.

Different tires on the rear?

When you must replace only two tires on your vehicle, it is essential to make sure that the front and rear tires are the same kind. It is recommended to use a set of tires that match in terms of size, tread depth and pattern, model, and brand. Mixing vehicle’s tires with different tread patterns or sizes can result in unbalanced driving, compromised handling, and reduced traction. Also, you should never combine winter tires with summer tires. When it’s time to change the winter tires, don’t mix studded tires and non-studded tires, as it results in compromised road safety.

Ensure tire safety for a smoother drive

While aiming to replace all four tires simultaneously is ideal, if necessary, opt for new tires on the rear axle to maintain stability. Check the tires' tread wear regularly. We recommend replacing worn tires with new ones ideally before the tread depth reaches 4/32 inches. Prioritize tire uniformity, ensure better grip on the rear axle, and drive safely for peace of mind in all weather conditions.
