Very hard to obtain - Fantastic Winter Tyre

Ginger 2 • 2 years ago

Used Nokian for years - Best winter tyres I have ever had - however when I had one tyre go down on me whilst driving, thereby ruining the tyre before being able to stop, all due to a problem with the valve stem leaking air gradually, I have now re-considered. I had an extremely hard time locating a replacement [no major high street tyre company appears to stock, or even consider dealing with Nokian due I understand mainly to the link to Russia] causing my car to be off the road for almost a Month, whilst awaiting a replacement tyre at high cost from Europe [Germany] I also contacted listed Nokian dealers and Nokian customer service for help, all of who were totally useless and very unhelpful. Unfortunately this has caused me to highly reconsider when I replace my tire's going to easily obtained main stream manufacturers such as Avon, Michelin, Continental etc.

Recomended but with concerns

archelefth • 3 years ago

It is the 3rd season I use this tyre and my impression is a bit of a mixed bag. Good performance in snow and ice but not in the level of other NOKIAN wintertyres. Wet grip and handling is below average. Roling resistance and comfort are good but wear as well below average.

Expensive averadge ..

Traveler75 • 3 years ago

Bought 2017 with dot 13/2016 driven 4 seasons about 35000km on the Kia Sorento also in the XL version very floating on snow and asphalt. This year I had to balance them twice because the tread is uneven (visible wavy) all made in Russia. After 10 years of using Nokian, I'm thinking about changing the brand. One big plus I have to give for the side walls with aramid technology they really work.

Best Tires Ever

Gurltech • 6 years ago

Left my Audi S5 in Florida with winter tires on it. Bought a Hyundai Santa Fe WITHOUT AWD in Florida and drove it back to Washington, DC in the winter. Discovered on the trip home the tires needed to be replaced. I did not want to go through the summer/ winter tire swap so I looked for an all season that would suit my needs. I found Nokian 4 season tires! Wow! is all I can say. I don't drive the car but my Wife who is from Florida and has limited experience driving in snow slush and ice does and boy was I worried about a front wheel drive car in the unpredictable D.C. winter. My wife is also a pothole magnet she never met a pothole that she did not roll over or hit....so another worry . But everything turned out ok the tires held up in the D.C. cold and ice with a little snow. The tires and the Hyundai also performed well pulling a 12 ft uhaul trailer down to Florida and the Tires do well in the Florida rain. We have had the tires on the car for a year and I can say my wife has put them through their paces and they still look as good as the day I bought them. I cannot give these tires enough thumbs up if you are on the fence this is what you needed to read. Thank You Nokian you have a fan for life!

Deep snow & compacted Ice no problem for sensible & skilfull drivers

Ginger1 • 6 years ago

Additional to my previous review on the 18 inch WR SUV 3 tyres fitted to my Volvo XC90 which I found worked exceptionally well on Thursday of this week here in Leeds which suffered some of the worst snow and weather in the country - My heavy vehicle loves them, not a hint of slipping even on solid ice / compacted snow, up hill or down, providing of course one drives sensibly [low gears up and down hills, gentle braking, and of course low revs & speed etc.], and skillfully [I sought to increase my driving skills a made it a starting point, after passing my test many years ago, I think a lot of people pass and then retard backwards. Good winter tyres do help considerably on snow etc. but can not cover for shockingly low or non-existent skill / abilities such as I witnessed on that day, and no it can not always be blamed on the lack of gritting it was the pure stupidity of some drivers who should have stayed at home or caught the bus, instead of causing gridlock and many unnesesary crashes, which increase the insurance premiums for all of us.

NOT RECOMMENDED FOR UK

Snowwie • 6 years ago

Having used WRD3 and WRD4 from NOKIAN in the past, I opted for WRSUV3 on my NISSAN XTRAIL. Very very dissatisfied with light snow covered handling compared to Dr and D4's. NOKIAN very unhelpful in helping to resolve and have removed them in favour of WRD4's at my own cost. currently seeking refund via Credit card as retailer refused refund. These are no where near as effective as other NOKIAN tyres where there is less than 1pm covering of fresh snow. I have driven these tyres in deep snow and are excellent in every way. The most common UK snow however is light covering to 4pm and these tyres do not cope.

The ''Beast from the East'' during Winter 2018 - was easily tamed by Nokian WR SUV 3 tyres

Ginger1 • 6 years ago

These tyres are in my opinion ''the best'', and are / have being used now for a year with all year round use on my Volvo XC90, after all we get more bad weather than good in the North of England. The grip from these tyres in winter is something to behold [what snow, ice & rain ?], and believed. The only marginally increased stopping distance in comparison with ''good'' summer tyres [in hot weather only - when we get any] is far outweighed by the much shorter stopping distances [compared to premium quality summer tyres] in the wet & especially in the cold [ 7 degree C & below ], that we have the majority of the year. These tyres are in my opinion much more comfortable, quieter, and better wearing [even used in the summer months - which would usually take its toll on a softer rubber winter tyre compound] than even the previous German Continental tyres that I considered to be ''good in summer but not in winter''. It would appear that there is something to be said for buying winter tyres from a country such as Finland where they endure cold and snowy weather a lot more than we do, and know how to build tyres to tame the weather. When these do eventually wear down to an ''acceptable and safe limit'', which at the current rate of wear I anticipate to be at least another year, I will have no hesitation in purchasing another set, and regularily recommend Nokian tyres to others. Wet weather grip is highly impressive,

  • When selecting a tyre, always choose one that matches your usage in the best possible way. In addition to the three characteristics, there are a number of other factors related to safety, performance, and the environment that tyre developers and testers take into account.
  • Although the new label makes it easier to compare tyre models, you should also support your decision by consulting the following, for example tyre retail experts or independent magazine test articles.
  • The wet grip rating for a tyre does not indicate how suitable the tyre is for the real winter weather. Instead, it may be misleading and endanger traffic safety. In demanding and varying winter conditions, the most important safety characteristics for tyres are ice grip and snow grip.

NOKIAN TYRES ARAMID SIDEWALL TECHNOLOGY

Durability and protection for surprising situations

The sidewall compound that is exceptionally durable and puncture-resistant contains extremely strong aramid fibres. The same material is utilised by the aerospace and defence industries. The aramid fibre strengthens the sidewall rubber to withstand external impacts and pressing against the wheel flange.

Snow Claws

Extreme winter grip

The snow claws designed on the longitudinal and diagonal grooves of the tyre's tread blocks ensure exceptional winter grip. The snow claws effectively grip their surface when driving in soft snow and on other soft terrain types, providing high-class grip on snow and ice.

Groove Lifts

Stable and controlled progress

In varying, versatile SUV use, it is especially important to have the tyre behave in a controlled and logical manner while driving. This is helped by the Groove Lifts on the tread blocks adjacent to the centre rib of the symmetrical tread model and the longitudinal ribs. This additional support combines the best features of the longitudinally ribbed and arrow-patterned winter tyres. The Groove Lifts also make the tyre behave in an extremely stable and controlled manner on dry roads. The Groove Lifts also prevent small rocks from becoming wedged in the grooves.
