Nokian Rockproof – a new, strong special tyre for demanding professionals
Nokian Rockproof, a new product from Nokian Tyres, offers extreme durability for professional driving and off-road enthusiasts. The Nokian Rockproof is a fearless performer at quarries, forests and mining areas. This sturdy new tyre is a tireless workhorse with a thoroughbred mining compound that can handle even unexpected impacts during demanding off-road use.
The new cut-resistant Nokian Rockproof Hybrid tread compound and aggressive tread pattern provide the tyre with excellent resistance even in rough off-road conditions. The Nokian Rockproof was designed for light trucks, SUVs and off-road use. It was developed in cooperation with Nokian Heavy Tyres and tested by professionals at mines and quarries in Europe and North America.
The Nokian Rockproof is a unique display of skill from the world’s northernmost tyre manufacturer. The tyre seamlessly combines the special durability of heavy machine tyres with the comfort of passenger car tyres.
The speed rating of this new tyre is Q (160 km/h) and the size selection in Europe covers 8 sizes. Nokian Rockproof will be available to consumers in early 2017.
Precise handling, longer service life
The optimised tread block support provides more precise handling and stability. Two different side angles and the staggered support on the block sides ensure that the tyre’s tread blocks remain firm and that the groove bottoms will not be damaged even during rougher driving. The reinforced upper part of the sidewall provides additional protection against puncture and cut damage caused by sharp rocks.
The stone ejectors at the groove bottoms of this sturdy new tyre prevent sharp and jagged stones from attaching to the tread surface and penetrating the tyre structure. The stone ejectors improve the tyre’s service life and offer additional protection by preventing tyre body damage, especially on uneven terrain.
– Off-road driving and the toughest professional use require extreme durability from the tyre, and puncture protection in particular. Under these conditions, tyres may sometimes have unpleasantly short service lives. Accidental damage causes a lot of additional costs and tyre changes result in additional work. The tyre has excellent cut resistance due to the tread compound that was developed for use in mines. The tyre’s strong structure and aramid sidewalls protect the tyre against damage from the sides. This product has been developed for improving the efficiency of demanding professional use, says Olli Seppälä, Product Development Manager for Nokian Tyres.
Aramid Sidewall – a bulletproof vest for your tyre
The Aramid Sidewall technology developed by Nokian Tyres offers a new type of durability and protection for demanding driving conditions. The tyre’s sidewall structure contains extremely strong aramid fibre. The fibre reinforces the sidewall, making it more resistant to impacts and cuts that could otherwise easily damage it. Sidewall damage usually requires fitting a replacement tyre. Aramid fibre is also utilised by the aerospace and defence industries.
The unique, red Rockproof logo of this new tyre is located on the sidewall. The logo will initially be available in the size 315/70R17 and may possibly be added to other sizes later.

Canadian Dyer Logging operator Tom Brain from Vancouver Island, British Columbia has been testing the new special tyre Nokian Rockproof. Tom works every day in very challenging conditions in forestry logging sites and drives on roads that mostly consists of shot rock. For the past few months, Tom and his 4x4 have found that Nokian Rockproof gives durability a new meaning.
“We’ve put on roughly 50 000 kilometers on these tyres and more than half of that on gravel. We drive quite a bit off-road and in the past, we have literally driven into a logging site with a set of tyres that are only 2 weeks old, and come out of there with a flat. In the 50 000 kilometers we’ve put on these tyres, there might have been one flat, which is truly exceptional. I can assure you, that Nokian Rockproof is a one tough tyre” Tom says.
