New EU tire label regulation will be widened to cover also truck and bus tires
Tire labels will be renewed across the entire EU. New labels are required on tires manufactured after April 2021, so the new labels will start gradually appearing on truck and bus tires that are offered for sale. A revised version of the EU tire label will be in effect on May 1, 2021 onwards.
The new EU tire label requirement will bring changes in the actual content of the label as well as how it must be displayed. The label renewal aims to make the choice for safer, eco-friendlier and fuel-efficient tires even easier.
EU label for truck and bus tires
With the upcoming change, the use of the physical label on tire tread surface will be widened to also include truck and bus tires, where until now it has been required to show label grades only in marketing materials and technical specifications
The new label includes a classification for rolling resistance, wet grip and external rolling noise. The classes in wet grip and fuel efficiency are renewed to be similar to those of other household appliances. The labels will include a scale from A to E. In addition, there is a new way of marking noise class with letters from A to C, and the decibel level must also be mentioned.
Tires approved for severe snow conditions (3PMSF) can include information on snow grip whereas the ice grip marking used with passenger car tires, is not applicable for truck and bus tires. The new label includes a QR code that can be scanned to see more information on the tire in EPREL, European Product Registry for Energy Labelling.
In the future, the tire labels will be expanded further, as they will also report abrasion, or tire wear, and mileage or the tire’s service life on the road. The decision has already been made but confirming the test methods will take years.

– The increased emphasis on sustainability will make low rolling resistance and fuel economy even more important. On the other hand, snow grip is very important especially in the Nordic countries and Germany. Massive database of all tires
Nokian Tyres provides each tire with the relevant EU tire label. Also all the promotional materials will have the tire label information as requested by the regulations.
In addition, Nokian Tyres will register also all truck and bus tires in the EPREL (European Product Registry for Energy Labelling) database.
The new label includes a QR code that can be scanned to see more information about the tire in EPREL. The product information is standardized, allowing for an easy comparison of the tires. The tire label is also available for download and print out in EPREL.
